Essentials

You can get on a bike and ride wearing practically anything, but there are a few items of specialized bicycle clothing that make riding safer, more comfortable and more fun.

Must have:

• Helmet: While everyone has ridden a bike "lidless," we strongly recommend wearing a helmet whenever riding a bicycle.
• Cycling shoes: If you ride with modern, clipless pedals, you definitely need a pair of cycling shoes.

Should have:

• Cycling shorts: Any pair of shorts will work for a short ride. For anything longer than a few minutes, you'll be far more comfortable wearing shorts designed specifically for cycling.
• Cycling gloves: Cycling gloves have padding in the palm that cushions and protects the nerves that pass through your hand, minimizing numb fingers.
• Sunglasses: Not just to let you see better in bright conditions, sunglasses are your "windshield" if you don't wear regular glasses.

Nice to have:

• Cycling jersey: Not only does wearing a colorful jersey add to the "coolness factor" when riding, it also increases your visibility. Made with special fabrics that wick away moisture, they keep you more comfortable. Cycling jerseys also have pockets that give you a place to put your energy bar, keys, etc.
• Cool weather gear: Tights, legwarmers, arm warmers, booties, vest, jacket - whatever you need to stay warm riding in the early spring or late fall. Or even in the winter.
