Essentials for the bike

There are literally hundreds of accessories designed for bicycles and bicycling. They range from simple things like fenders to clip-on triathlon bars and even studded snow tires. Here are a few that we consider essential.

Must haves:

Pump and spare tube: You will get a flat sooner or later, and being able to fix it sure beats having to walk home. (Make sure you also carry tire irons if you need them.) Get a patch kit to fix the tube when you get home. Also, most riders also have a more powerful floor-model pump to use at home.
Hydration: While you don’t need to drink on short rides, especially in cooler weather, you definitely should carry water or sports drink in the summer. All road riders and many mountain-bike riders carry one or two water bottles in cages on the bike’s frame. Some riders wear special hydration packs that hold more liquid and often have space for other stuff.

Should have:

Saddle bag: A small bag that fits a spare tube, maybe some tools, your keys and some money is lots handier, and more comfortable, than putting everything in your jersey pockets. Use your pockets for things you’ll want get to while riding.
Lock: There will be times that you have to leave your ride unattended. A lock will make sure it’s still there when you return.

Nice to have:

Cyclocomputer: This modern version of bike speedometer will tell you more than just how fast you’re going. Most display riding time, average speed, maximum speed and distance ridden. Several tell pedal cadence and have heart-rate functions.
Lights: Lights fall into the “must have” category if you do any riding at night. On the road you will need at least a small flashing taillight and some sort of headlight. Off road you’ll probably want a more powerful headlight and maybe a light that mounts to your helmet.
