Stumpjumper FSR

It's all about the trail and riding as much of it as possible. Each Stumpjumper FSR delivers awesome suspension and geometry in a lightweight and highly efficient package so the rider can find the flow on more of his/her favorite trail. The Stumpjumper FSR is truly a technical condition XC race bike and a fast all-mountain trail bike.

From components to bikes

Specialized began as a manufacturer of components and road and touring bikes in 1974, just as people were starting to put together bikes from old parts to ride in the woods. Building on Gary Fisher's idea of a bike especially designed for this, Specialized introduced their Stumpjumper in 1981, making it the first mass-produced mountain bike in the world. The sport of mountain biking exploded, with off-road bikes soon outselling every other type.

Team Stumpjumper

With the sport booming, it wasn't long before some riders decided to go pro. Specialized sponsored the first professional mountain-bike team, Team Specialized, in 1983. The first NORBA national championship was held two years later and was won by Ned Overend, Team Specialized's captain. In 1987, Lisa Muhich, another Team Specialized rider, also won at the nationals. This was just the beginning of a long series of victories by Specialized-sponsored riders on the national and world stage. The Specialized Factory Racing Team is still in existence.

Constant change and innovation

Specialized has long been at the forefront of the continuing technical innovation in off-road bicycles. The first carbon-fiber mountain-bike frame, the Stumpjumper Epic, was produced in 1988. The modern-style full suspension frame, the Specialized FSR, came to the mass market in 1993. This is basically the same design used for “four-bar” rear suspensions to this day. The Specialized Epic, the first full-suspension bike to win a World Cup, used the “Brain™” shock. This makes the frame a hardtail until a bump comes from below. Then the bike is a fully-active full-suspension bike until the lack of additional bumps resets the frame to rigid mode.

Today, Specialized continues to innovate, but still remembers the past. The Stumpjumper is still in production, with seven different models. There are also seven models of women's-specific mountain bikes. There's even a line of bomb-proof bikes, the P.Series, designed to excel at jumps and in skate parks. Whatever type of off-road riding you do, from the steepest downhill or gnarliest trail to a gentle "rails-to-trail", Specialized has a bike for you.
